Poetic and nuanced music from a quartet led by two wonderful musicians, vocalist Sara Colman and pianist Rebecca Nash, whose decade long partnership is highlighted by the release of their acclaimed new album ‘Ribbons’ on Stoney Lane Records. The long standing relationship between these two musicians makes their sophisticated and adventurous music sound easy; intimate, lyrical and beautiful, it draws on jazz, folk, singer-songwriters and classical music, and influences including Joni Mitchell, John Taylor, Rickie Lee Jones, Quercus, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn and Debussy. Sara Colman’s flawlessly expressive vocals are complemented by Rebecca Nash’s perfectly attuned and harmonically rich piano playing, it’s music that is deeply felt, sensitive and thoughtful. They’re joined for this concert by the inspiring and subtly propulsive rhythm section from the album; Henrik Jensen (double bass) and Jonathan Silk (drums).

Sara Colman has recorded three solo albums, with her third ‘Ink on a Pin’ universally acclaimed, resulting in Sara being awarded ‘Lyricist of the Year’ in the UK songwriting competition. She has worked with many leading lights of UK music, including Laura Mvula and Mahalia, and appeared at festivals including Cheltenham, Manchester, Mostly Jazz, ReVoice and Sligo.

Rebecca Nash is firmly established as one of the UK’s most distinctive pianists, with two acclaimed albums on Whirlwind recordings, her recent collaboration with trumpeter Nick Walters (Sarsen Drift) recently headlined at the Manchester Jazz Festival, and she’s also performed at venues and festivals including EFG London Jazz Festival, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, We Out Here Festival, Love Supreme Festival, and Ronnie Scott’s amongst others.

Henrik Jensen is much in demand across the UK as well as working globally at venues including the Blue Note in Tokyo, and closer to home across the London jazz scene in collaborations with artists including Michael Blake, Elizabeth Shepherd, Gene Calderazzo and Billy Jenkins, as well has his own outstanding quartet ‘Followed by Thirteen’.

On drums, Jonathan Silk is a composer and bandleader based in Birmingham and has released two acclaimed albums with his own big band and string orchestra as well as working with world-renowned composers Vince Mendoza and Maria Schneider and a host of other nationally and internationally renowned musicians. He was awarded BBC Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year in 2014.
