Part of Leeds’ independent jazz and experimental music scene, Ferg’s Imaginary Big Band bring energy, enthusiasm and punk ethos together in an explosive mix, earning them a reputation for unmissable and uplifting live performances. The 25+ member ensemble (including members of Awen Ensemble, Ancient Infinity Orchestra, Plantfood & KOG) is a who’s who of the North’s jazz and improvised music scene, led by bassist and composer Fergus Quill. Known for expansive and immersive arrangements, the band takes inspiration from a wide tapestry of influences; from The Sun Ra Arkestra, Duke Ellington and Count Basie, to bowling, Godzilla and Mexican-American restaurants. The band were winners of the 2023 Peter Whittingham Jazz Award, are part of Jazz North’s 2025 Northern Line programme, and were nominated for the 2025 Jazz FM Innovation Award. Their third album, The New Atomic, was released in 2026 via Trash City Records.

Fergus Quill is a composer, musician and bandleader based in Leeds, UK His projects include Ferg’s Imaginary Big Band, Fergus Quill’s Electric Noise Ensemble and the Fergus Quill Trio. With influences ranging from Sidney Bechet to Boredoms he aims to build on the canon of 20th, 21st and 22nd century improvised music to find a way forward.
