Another fascinating collaboration as the dynamic and innovative Swiss piano trio VEIN, link up with Stan Sulzmann, veteran of the British jazz scene and one of its most admired and respected musicians. This is the latest in a series of long-term partnerships VEIN have forged with star soloists. Their music is played with drive and superb interplay which, with Stan’s wonderfully lyrical sound, produces a powerful, passionate quartet. Together they blend the complexity of European classical chamber music with the thrills and energy of jazz improvisation at its most sophisticated. “One of Europe’s most exciting ensembles” – John Fordham, The Guardian.

Drummer Florian Arbenz, arguably one of the best drummers in Europe and winner of a European Culture Award has been playing jazz together with his twin brother, pianist Michael Arbenz since his teenage years. Bassist Thomas Lähns who equally deserves the prodigy status completes band and all three are classically trained. The trio was formed over a decade ago and since then they have established an enviable reputation among jazz audiences for both stylistic diversity and technical accomplishment. What they aim to achieve with their music is the greatest possible balance of their three voices – starting with the way they work out their own compositions and arrangements and going right through to the soloistic parts. Musical leadership is equally shared, creating a fluid, cosmopolitan sound. The result is impressive musical togetherness, packed with surprising melodic, rhythmic and dynamic turns, played with highest precision. VEIN’s music is composed by all three members – originals are balanced with adaptations of pieces from both the classical and jazz traditions, such as the acclaimed album ‘VEIN Plays Ravel’ (2017). They have released an album nearly every year and gained recognition for long-term collaborations with star veteran soloists including Glenn Ferris, Greg Osby, Dave Liebman and Andy Sheppard.

“Nice work, get it! Incredibly creative piano trio”Rolling Stone

“For a demonstration of what the jazz trio has been, and can be, it’s hard to imagine anyone doing it better” –  Matthew Wright,

Saxophonist Stan Sulzmann is one of the most highly respected musicians in the UK today, admired by musicians and audiences for his wonderfully lyrical sound and boundless creative imagination. Stan’s biography reads like a ‘Who’s Who?’ of jazz – Kenny Wheeler, Graham Collier, John Taylor, Gordon Beck and Marc Copland have all been long-term associates while his duo with Nikki Iles has resulted in three highly acclaimed albums. His forty years in the business have seen him work with Gil Evans, Mike Gibbs, New York Composers’ Orchestra, Michael Brecker and the NDR Big Band (alongside Chet Baker). Highly in demand as a sideman, Stan has worked with musicians including: Jim Mullen, David Murray, Eberhard Weber, Kit Downes and Gwilym Simcock. As well as having a prolific output as a bandleader Stan is also a highly respected composer and arranger and in 2013 he was commissioned to write a composition for the London Jazz Festival.

“But a shining light of the whole attractive enterprise is the presence of Stan Sulzmann, who seems to sound more personal and hauntingly moving than ever”’ – John Fordham, Jazz UK

“It simply doesn’t get any better than this” – John Kelman
