Experience the fusion of contemporary jazz and Azerbaijani folk music through the original compositions of acclaimed pianist Elchin Shirinov, whose innovative style and virtuosic piano skills have earned him international recognition. Elchin featured in All About Jazz’s 2022 poll of the top 200 favourite living pianists in the world. With Italian Andrea Di Biase’s deep, lyrical bass lines and British drummer Dave Hamblett’s rhythmic precision, the trio creates a rich tapestry of sound that is intricate and accessible and perfectly complement Elchin’s compositions. Expect a performance that transcends cultural boundaries and exemplifies the vibrant energy of modern jazz.

Originally from Azerbaijan, Elchin Shirinov was a member of bassist Avishai Cohen’s trio from 2018 to Oct 2022, during which time he recorded three albums and toured internationally at festivals and venues such as Blue Note New York, Ronnie Scott’s, Tokyo Jazz festival, Berlin Philharmonic concert hall and the Paris Jazz festival. Their most recent album Shifting Sands was chosen as Album of the Month in The Guardian. He has also recorded his own albums, ‘Maiden Tower’ in 2017 and Waiting’ in 2018. As a solo artist Elchin has toured in London, Paris, Berlin, Budapest, Krakow, Milan and Vienna.  https://www.elchinshirinov.com/

“… Shirinov’s contrastingly imperturbable lyricism glow through this fine set – and if the new tunes add few surprises to the leader’s signature songbook, the playing is incandescent.” – John Fordham, The Guardian

“Elchin has a really good sense of how to orchestrate for the trio setting… that makes the listening experience pleasing to listen to, …strong compositions, nice improvising, really good trio playing.” – Brad Mehldau

Andrea Di Biase studied Classical Double Bass at Conservatory of Milan and Jazz at the Guildhall School. He has performed with Dave Liebman, renowned Italian pianist Antonio Zambrini and many leading figures in British jazz such as Stan Sulzmann, Norma Winstone and Kenny Wheeler. He is co-leader of the band Escape Hatch with pianist Ivo Neame, with whom he recorded the album ‘Roots of Unity’ for Whirlwind records, featuring saxophonist Julian Arguelles. Andrea also co-leads his own group, European jazz/post-rock quartet Dugong, with whom he has toured extensively in recent years and has a longstanding collaboration with pianist Bruno Heinen with whom he recorded many albums.  www.andreadibiase.com

Dave Hamblett is a graduate of Royal Academy of Music. In addition to his extensive touring and recording work as a sideman, Dave is an accomplished bandleader and composer in his own right having released his debut album on Whirlwind Recordings in 2013 to wide critical acclaim. Current projects include Snowpoet, Seafarers, Flying Machines, The Magic Lantern, Josienne Clarke and Wanderland.  www.davehamblett.com
