Exciting tenor saxophonist Brandon Allen’s latest project celebrates one of his great influences, the late soulful, hard blowing American tenor player Stanley Turrentine.  It’s a homage to Turrentine’s trademark sound which blended bop with rhythm and blues, capturing the spirit and exploring the stylistic changes that occurred throughout his career. This top notch band, with the superb Will Barry on piano, will focus on Turrentine’s recordings on the Blue Note and CTI labels and some of his reimagined versions of rock/pop hits of the 60’s and 70’s. Expect soulful expressive saxophone playing accompanied by a hard swinging and funky rhythm section.

“This was a performance full of energy and brio with all four musicians right on top of their game and impressing both individually and collectively” – the JazzMann.com review of live performance of the Stanley Turrentine project

Originally from Australia, saxophonist, composer and arranger Brandon Allen relocated to London in 2000. A composer of music for Film, TV and production music his distinctive saxophone sound has been featured on film soundtracks including “Alfie”(2004) and “The Look of Love” (2013). His other projects have included the ‘Gene Ammons Project’ and ’Misterioso Quartet’, performing new interpretations of Thelonious Monk’s music. The ‘Stanley Turrentine Project’ came about because of a deep admiration and respect for the saxophonist’s musical approach and output. A major artist on Blue Note Records he was renowned for his distinctively thick, rippling tone, an earthy grounding in the blues and his ability to work a groove with soul and imagination. Sideman to the likes of Ray Charles, Max Roach and Earl Bostic; he’s best known as leader of his own groups, for his Blue Note soul-jazz jams of the ’60s and his Jazz-Fusion period in the early ’70s.  www.brandonallen.co.uk/home

“Brandon Allen is arguably the most exciting tenor player in Britain today. His phrasing is unashamedly emotional, soaked in the blues tradition” – Tony Hall, Jazzwise
