Norwegian masters of melody Espen Eriksen Trio with multi-award winning British saxophonist Andy Sheppard is a partnership that has resulted in international tours and two acclaimed albums. Espen’s trio is a tight unit with a dazzling use of dynamics, ranging from melancholic moods to hypnotic grooves and an almost telepathic level of interplay. With a career spanning over four decades, working with the likes of George Russell, Gil Evans and Carla Bley, Andy Sheppard is truly one of Europe’s leading saxophonists and composers. Expect absorbing and uplifting music from superb musicians at the top of their game.

“The symbiosis between the saxophonist and the trio is truly remarkable” – All About Jazz

Espen Eriksen Trio was formed in 2007 and has released four critically acclaimed records on the Norwegian label Rune Grammofon. Their music relies on highly melodic and lyrical instrumentals and a “less is more” approach and is often credited for its unique voice within today’s jazz scene by the international press. When they embarked on their first full scale UK tour in May 2016, saxophonist Andy Sheppard joined the Trio for two concerts in London. From the first notes it was clear that this was a perfect match. The interplay was seamless and it was as if the melodies of pianist Espen Eriksen were specially written for Andy Sheppard. Andy has been playing with the trio on a regular basis since then and features on the band’s 2018 album ‘Perfectly Unhappy’ and their live album ‘In The Mountains’ released in 2022.  www.espeneriksentrio.com/

“…an album of classy, inventive jazz improvisation that’s pretty near perfect”‘ – Stuart Nicholson, Jazzwise 4* review of  ‘In The Mountains’

Norwegian pianist Espen Eriksen has a wide ranging musical background varying from church organ to work with pop bands. His jazz credentials include work with saxophonist Bendik Hofseth, bassist Mats Eilertsen and drummer Thomas Stronen of Food fame. He has also acted as pianist and musical director for singer Christina Bjordal and appeared on her international début album ‘Brighter Days’ (2008).

“this tantalising live album deserves to place him (Eriksen) in the pantheon of greats” – Gareth Thompson, AllAboutJazz 4* review of ‘In The Mountains’

Also from Norway drummer Andreas Bye has worked with many of his country’s leading musicians including Bugge Wesseltoft and Nils Petter Molvaer and with Americans John Scofield and Joshua Redman and many others.

The trio is completed by bassist Lars Tormod Jenset who plays in a number of groups right across Scandinavia and Iceland and is also a composer and band leader in his own right.

An ECM recording artist, bandleader and composer Andy Sheppard is one of a very few British musicians to have made a significant impact on the international jazz scene, playing and writing for settings from solo to big band and chamber orchestra. He has been described as a serial collaborator, playing recording and developing new music with artists as varied as Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos, Indian violinist L.Shankar, English folk musician Kathryn Tickell, contemporary classical composer-performers John Harle and Joanna MacGregor, and singer/songwriter John Martyn as well as jazz musicians including Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, John Parricelli and Arild Andersen.  www.andysheppard.co.uk/
