Hannes Riepler: guitar; Tom Challenger: sax; Oli Hayhurst: bass; James Maddren: drums
Since moving to London from Austria in 2006, guitarist Hannes Riepler has made his mark on the city’s vibrant jazz scene, not only for his outstanding, inventive guitar skill and freewheeling energy, but as an extraordinarily talented composer. “The Brave” was his stunning debut, followed up by “Wild Life”, an album featuring NYC tenor man Chris Cheek (replaced on this tour by Tom Challenger, one of the finest of the new crop of British jazz musicians).
The Quartet will be performing music from both albums, each of them having received four star reviews. A stylish venture that at times thrills with the immediacy of New York’s propulsive downtown style, and at others swings like hell. With roots firmly established in the jazz tradition, yet with a sound influenced by rock, classical and folk music, this is a music that is contemporary and melodic. Featuring the crème of the UK jazz scene – tenor saxophonist Tom Challenger, Oli Hayhurst on bass, and drummer James Maddren.
“If music is indeed the food of love, I’ll dine out on this for a long time!”..Bebop Spoken Here
“London continues to be a magnet for foreign jazz musicians, and one of the best is Austrian guitarist Hannes Riepler”…The Daily Telegraph
“this is attractive, intelligent jazz performed by an accomplished, fiercely interactive but sensitive and thoughtful band.”…Chris Parker, London Jazz
