Jonathan Bratoeff Quartet
Friday, 14 May 2010, 08:30 PM - 11:15 PM
Jonathan Bratoeff – guitar, Mark Hanslip - tenor sax, Tom Mason - bass, James Maddren – drums
In 2003 Bratoëff and others from London’s F-ire Collective, studied at The School for Improvisational Music in New York, Ravi Coltrane and Jason Moran. The Quartet grew from that experience, producing a band that looks for a truly contemporary sound. Key ingredients are powerful melodies, energetic vibrant rhythms and rich colourful textures - a blend drawing on African, Rock and Latin music as well as the jazz tradition - an honest sound that pushes boundaries and evokes raw emotions. “Bratoëff's brittle phrasing and rhythmic energy put him up there with leading UK guitarists” John Forham, The Guardian “Jonathan Bratoëff is a serious talent, and his desire to push boundaries is to be applauded.” Chris May, All About Jazz “Downtown NYC edge; cut through with percolating African and Latin rhythms”,…“Thoughtful, delicate, yet powerful” Time Out
