Sheffield Jazz is now taking a summer break from its gigs at the Millennium Hall. Gigs there will restart with the Tina May Quartet on 4 October, preceded by our AGM and Jam Session on 22 September. Some of the UK's brightest young musicians in a fantastic Octet, led by top London drummer Dave Smyth, with Matthew Herd soprano/alto sax, Sam Rapley bass clarinet/tenor sax, Tom Green trombone, James Copus trumpet/flugelhorn, Sam Watts piano, John Arman guitar,Tom McCredie double bass.
26th June Miyako £5 2 saxophones, bass and drums, and some serious jazz - featuring Sheffield's sax hero Pete Lyons, with Alex Baker (sax), Rich Keates (bass), and Johnny Hunter (drums).
3rd July Gypsies of Bohemia £5 An acoustic jazz trio, mixing up the vintage and the new, capturing the chic sophistication of 1930's Cafe Paris but playing tunes by everyone from Britney Spears to Radiohead. They've played at Glastonbury, and Kendal Calling, and will be at this year's Manchester Jazz Festival. Jim Wallace – lead guitar, Matthew Whitaker – rhythm guitar, Frank Grime – double bass.
10th July Mick Beck £5 Sheffield-based improv legend in a slightly more straight ahead context, with a quartet of great younger musicians drawn from the Sheffield, Leeds and Manchester scenes. Nick Fletcher (piano), Seth Bennett (bass) and Johnny Hunter (drums).
17th July Matt Anderson Wildflower Sextet £5 Brilliant young sax player, recently here with Jamie Taylor's band, leading a quintet of the UK's finest musicians, and celebrating the music of Wayne Shorter. Richard Iles (trumpet/flugelhorn), Jamil Sheriff (piano), Dave Walsh (drums), Sam Vicary (bass).
24th July LOCUS £5 Fantastic transatlantic sextet featuring US-based Leah Gough-Cooper (alto) with more of the UK's most exciting young jazz talent: Riley Stone-Lonergan (tenor), Kim Macari (trumpet), Sam Leak (piano, here recently with his group Aquarium), Tom Wheatley (bass) and Jay Davis (drums).
31st July Ben Powling Quintet £5 A really solid and mature sounding young tenor player and future star from Leeds, featuring a group playing his own accessible compositions. With Ben are George Birkett - Guitar, Alec Hewes - Bass, Peter Fernandes - Piano, Fred Harper - Drums.
7th August Jamie Taylor (guitar) and Russ Henderson (sax) £5 Two seriously top class musicians return (Jamie previously here with his own group, and Russ with Katie Patterson's Allsorts), coming together to produce an intimate and swinging evening of their own original interpretations of the music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn.
14th August Gary Reader Moja Quartet £5 The sound of classic 50s Blue Note, mixed with contemporary beats and rhythms, and recent appearances in Nice under their belt, Gary Reader (tenor sax), Dan Johnson (guitar), bass and drums to be confirmed.
21st August Preston - Glasgow - Lowe £5 Three virtuoso musicians with a great contemporary sound - guitarist David Preston is a fantastic talent who has toured and recorded with Melody Gardot. Kevin Glasgow on bass has played with (amongst others) Tommy Smith, Joe Locke, Clarke Tracey, Gareth Lochrane. Laurie Lowe (drums) has featured with Gilad Atzmon, Andy Sheppard and many others. Expect brilliant improvisation, complex rhythms, and accessible melodies. |
