John Taylor Trio with special guest Julian Arguelles

“Requiem for a Dreamer”

John Taylor – piano

Palle Danielsson – bass

Martin France – drums

Julian Arguelles - sax

As part of John Taylor's 65th birthday celebrations, we welcome his fantastic trio back to the Studio with a new commission, and special guest in the form of the wonderful saxophonist Julian Argüelles.

As well as the new suite 'Requiem for a Dreamer' which takes its name from a conversation between the writers Kurt Vonnegut and Kilgore Trout, there will be more new compositions connecting to Mr Vonnegut's work in general.

Kurt Vonnegut sadly passed away in 2007, and John hopes this performance will pay tribute to the great man.

John Taylor is one of the greatest musicians the UK has produced. A tower genius of the piano and a brilliant composer, he stands comparison with the late Bill Evans (and in fact his 2003 trio featured Marc Johnson – Bill Evan’s last bass player) for his contributions to the art of jazz piano. For living pianist perhaps the appropriate comparison is with Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau.

Julian Argüelles has toured and recorded throughout the world with a huge list of acclaimed musicians. His fluid, expressive style sees him recognised now as one of the leading saxophone voices in the country.

Benn Clatworthy – tenor sax
Cecilia Coleman – pno
Neil Yates – trumpet
Mike Janisch - bass

Always a storming response at Sheffield Jazz!. A raw, cutting edge style, straight out of Coltrane, but even his most intense passages are lyrical and thoughtful. Born in South London, he now lives in Los Angeles, where he’s made a name for himself playing with the likes of Cedar Walton. Tunes will be contributed by New York resident Cecilia Coleman - a highly acclaimed pianist, composer and educator with a string of American jazz Festival performances to her name.

Bobby Wellins Quartet

Bobby Wellins – tenor sax

Mark Edwards – piano

Andy Cleyndert – bass

Spike Wells – drums

Bobby Wellins has been a significant force in British Jazz since the mid 50s. His playing on Stan Tracey’s Under Milk Wood album in 1965 was a major contribution to its seminal status (voted all-time favourite British jazz album in a ‘Jazz UK’ readers poll). A keeper of the be-bop flame for many years, his playing now is as adventurous and exploratory as ever. “…at 70, Wellins is playing as well as ever, maybe better. ..this quartet gets bop-based jazz the best publicity”. John FordhamWellins has one of the most beautiful tenor saxophone sounds in the history of the instrument. The best has yet to come" Dave Gelly - The Observer

Scenes in the City - The Music of Charles Mingus

Benefit concert for Sheffield Jazz

Alan Barnes - sax
Tony Kofi - sax
Alistair White - trombone Mark Edwards – piano Arnie Somogyi – bass

Enzo Zirrilli – drums

Arnie Somogyi has brought great jazz to the British scene, through the Hungarian jazz musicians of the bands Cold Cherry Soup and Improvokation and his current band Ambulance, which had the first ever jazz residency at Aldeburgh. Now he brings his latest musical project to the Studio to support Sheffield Jazz. They are not only grateful to all the musicians involved for this support but also priviledged to stage the premier concert of this band.

Arnie calls it “A repertoire, rather than a tribute band”! Scenes in the City combines the talents of some of the UK's leading jazz musicians to draw from the music of the great jazz composer and bassist, Charles Mingus. The band embodies the freedom of interpretation and drive that characterise the music of one of the most important and colourful figures in jazz. Expect to hear lesser known Mingus compositions as well as familiar favourites such as "Boogie Stop Shuffle", "Fables of Faubus" and "Better Get Hit in Your Soul".

Sheffield Jazz want to continue to promote the best of UK and international jazz. Following their recent announcement of a current financial crisis they are very encouraged by the support from both audience and musicians. This is the first of three benefit concerts representing a welcomed practical display of that support.

New Couriers

Mornington Lockett- ts

Jim Hart - vibes

Steve Melling – piano

Martin Drew – drums

Paul Morgan – bass

A roaring night in store with the band started in 2000 as a tribute to the 1960s Tubby Hayes / Ronnie Scott Jazz Couriers. One of the best known hard swinging bands in the country, they’ve now extended their repertoire to include music relating to the spirit of Michael Brecker, who died recently. Martin Drew, who knew and worked with him, feels inspired by Brecker’s “dynamism and exuberance” to start a new phase for the band. “Drew's powerhouse drum pulse and Paul Morgan's flowing bass underpinned explosive tenor and piano cascades. A definition of swing, they capture the spirit and dynamism of the original Jazz Couriers” Chris Yates

Quentin Collins Quintet

Quentin Collins – trpt
Mike Janisch – bass
Jim Hart – vibes
Tony kofi - sax
Winston Clifford – dr

After several visits in other people’s bands, here’s young brass virtuoso Quentin Collins with his own vigorously interactive and intriguingly textured ensemble. His flaring brilliance has seen him compared with Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan but his own enthusiasm for the harmonic adventurousness of Booker Little shines through. Add the great sound of Jim Hart’s vibes and the nervy agility of Tony Kofi’s sax on the Monk pieces and you’ve got a night promising to show how vibrant the hard-bop tradition can be among younger British players.

Blue Concept Quintet

Allison – alto sax
Gary Kavanagh - tpt
Dave Cliff – gtr
Dave Whitford - bass

Allison Neale’s beautifully crafted lines evoke the spirit of Paul Desmond and Art Pepper, with whom she has a particular affinity. Gary Kavanagh, resident in Holland for some time, is well known on the European scene through festival and radio appearances. His playing combines fluidity and emotion with harmonic ideas reminiscent of Clifford Brown. They are joined by Dave Cliff, a long term stalwart of melodic improvisation in Britain seen over the years with dozens of USA visitors including a European tour with the Lee Konitz/Warne Marsh Quintet. Blue Concept is centred on Gigi Gryce's compositions from his 1950's Jazz Lab Quintet with Donald Byrd and Art Farmer.
